World Bee Day 2023

In Ireland - and around the world - it is World Bee Day today!

Having a specific day in the calendar to celebrate the importance of bees (and all pollinators) is a valuable opportunity to highlight the vital work that bees do each and every day, all around the world… As many of us well know, the importance of bees cannot be overstated - whether it maintaining healthy ecosystems, supporting human livelihoods and boosting people’s wellbeing in so many ways… So it is nice to celebrate this.

For Ireland this is also a day to remind ourselves that small countries can play a big role in promoting and protecting pollinators. Slovenia, a country with a rich and remarkable beekeeping tradition - yet with a population and territory even smaller than Ireland - was the instigator behind the creation of the official World Bee Day.

So on this World Bee Day 2023 - at Rewilding.ie we are celebrating three things:

  1. First and foremost - the 100 or so species of bee which share the island of Ireland with us!

  2. The amazing initiatives such as the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan which helps to rally people to help pollinators across Ireland.

  3. The accomplishment of Slovenia to mark World Bee Day as an official UN-recognised day of celebration and appreciation for bees… An inspirational example for Ireland - proving to us that smaller countries can play a big part in protecting pollinators locally and globally!
